Laurel Lake Retirement Community is a 150-acre, CCAC-accredited, continuing care retirement community of independent living apartments and villas. It also includes assisted living suites at Southwood and skilled nursing, rehabilitation services and a dementia program at The Crown Center.

Areas of Excellence
Areas of excellence at Laurel Lake Retirement Community include wellness education and advocacy; progressive recreational therapy; the Personal Health Partner Program for low-income seniors and Caring Connections to enhance the quality of end-of-life care; 24-hour skilled nursing and rehabilitation; an on-site clinic; physical, occupational and speech therapy; personal care services; transportation; a 24-hour security and emergency call system; an aquatic and fitness center; and wellness and activity programs.

In addition, Laurel Lake’s Personal Health Partner Program, which provides free wellness services to residents of two low-income senior housing complexes in the Akron area, received the Twelfth Annual Monroe E. Trout Premier Care Award Certificate of Merit from Premier, Inc. in January 2004 for the 2003 award period. In 2005, the program was also selected as a Best Practice by the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA).

In September 2004, Laurel Lake’s community benefit program, “Making a Difference, Neighbor to Neighbor,” received the Association of Ohio Philanthropic Homes for the Aging’s (AOPHA) Social Commitment Award.

In 2005, Laurel Lake was named the Eldercare Facility of the Year by the national nonprofit organization, Second Wind Dreams. Laurel Lake's Second Winds Dream program was singled out for its exceptional range of wishes fulfilled for elderly residents, its high degree of community support and the significant media attention it has attracted. The program was also featured in a CBS Evening News program.

Also in 2005, Laurel Lake's state-of-the-art Rosewood Villa, designed as an ideal environment for people living with mild cognitive impairment, was profiled in the national Design for Senior Environments 2005 architectural journal.

Emerging Innovations/Initiatives
Emerging innovations and initiatives at Laurel Lake Retirement Community include completing a $17.7 million community enhancement project, including a state-of-the-art, 14-bed residential care villa (Rosewood) for individuals with memory impairment; a 27-unit assisted living center (Greenwood); 15 new garden apartments; and eight new villas with two-car attached garages. The Crown Center opened its new Oakwood enhanced care wing for residents with dementia. Laurel Lake Retirement Community is preparing to become one of the first Eden Alternative facilities in Summit County.
